2023’s Top Denim Trends

Finding the right pair of jeans is easy with this handy fit guide.
By Natasha Marsh

Straight-Leg Jeans

With a slim fit in the hip and a slightly tapered leg, straight-leg jeans (think of them as the cool cousin to your skinny jeans) have been a classic for years—for good reason. Associate Fashion Director Kate Johanson says the latest pairs are modern yet timelessly cool, and go with practically every shoe in your closet. “This season we’re loving high rises, darker rinses, and a little crop that we can pair back to a variety of boots this season,” Johanson continues, citing AGOLDE and Citizens of Humanity as go-to brands.

Wide-Leg Jeans

For those looking for extra room in your denim, wide-leg jeans are the way to go. The options are endless: cropped, high-waist, trouser style… the versatility and comfort of this style knows no bounds. As for how to wear them? Johanson recommends going for a streamlined top to keep your appearance balanced and avoid the silhouette looking too oversized. Check out FRAME for pairs that are equal parts relaxed and tailored.

Bootcut Jeans

These aren’t your mom’s jeans: the latest trend on the denim scene is a ‘70s-inspired kick-flare pair. With a form-fitting waist and legs that widen toward the ankle, they look great with “structured and tailored tops, and cropped jackets that make them feel sleek and modern,” according to Johanson. From low rise to high waist, there’s a bootcut style for everyone’s fit preference. Johanson recommends Cali-cool brand SLVRLKE, whose designs put an of-the-moment spin on the vintage-y silhouette.

Baggy Jeans

Bolstered by Y2K nostalgia and popular for its comfort, baggy jeans are the loungewear of the denim world. “Baggy denim feels relaxed and casual while still on trend and dressed-up,” says Johanson. Loose through the hip and leg, with a less form-fitting waist, you might also find them under the moniker “boyfriend jeans”. Look for fun details like low-rise silhouettes, cargo pockets, puddle hems, top stitching, and paneling. Kate seeks out Closed for some of her favorite slouchy pairs.

Jean Shorts

The most popular summer style season after season, denim shorts can vary in color, fit, and length. Meaning, you can go as tight or as loose as you’d like with this denim staple. For 2023, it’s all about longer inseams, like Bermuda shorts, and roomy legs for a slouchier, more relaxed look (think: elevated comfort). Play up the casual-cool vibe of these trending styles by teaming them with flowy tunics, boxy tops, light cardigans, casual sneakers, beachy sandals & party heels. Johanson pegs AGOLDE as a brand to watch for this category.

White Jeans

Contrary to popular belief, you can wear white denim all year long. However, finding the perfect pair of jeans all comes down to the right silhouette. Because white is less forgiving and tighter than other washes, don’t be afraid to size up for a more comfortable and flattering fit. In 2023 specifically, Johanson predicts cropped straight and wide-leg white jeans will reign supreme (she recommends MOTHER for body-hugging pairs). “You’ll see stiffer, rigid styles for a modern look this year,” the expert says. Elevate the denim with heeled shoes to showcase the slimmer silhouettes.
