About the Designer

“A bag should, first and foremost, be a tool to carry goods.” Kichizo Yoshida discovered this firsthand in the aftermath of the Great Kanto Earthquake, when he and his fellow survivors had to find efficient ways to carry life-saving items. Adhering to that philosophy and the design principle of balancing form and function, Yoshida opened his first Yoshida Kaban Seisakujo atelier in Tokyo in 1935, and by 1962, the name Porter was introduced to distinguish the designer’s pieces. Today, the Yoshida family still owns the company, assuring Porter stays true to its original motto and the craftsmanship that has earned it a global following.
