An avid collector of kangas - colorful bolts of cotton cloth used in traditional African outfits - filmmaker Max Osterweis was inspired to put his stash to use in 2008 when he learned about Kenya’s violent post - election atmosphere. He enlisted the help of designer Erin Beatty to help him turn his cache of raw material into Suno’s first collections, thus setting the tone for the brands mission going forward: to bring positive attention and new job opportunities to Africa (and, more recently, India and Peru) by utilizing the abundance of local crafts manship its has to offer. Today, Suno clothing - printed dresses, separates, and coats - represents one of the industry's most successful hybrids of design and social responsibility.
