It’s fitting that Hudson, Massachusetts, home to some of the world’s chilliest winters, is the birthplace of Penfield. Launched in 1975 by apparel-industry veteran Harvey Gross, Penfield was an early adopter of both Gore-Tex and Polar Fleece, which made its coats extraordinarily warm. Combine that coziness with a New England-prep aesthetic, and Penfield parkas and vests have been cold-weather staples ever since.
