Givenchy’s crazy epic lineup of creative directors—including John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, and, most recently, Riccardo Tisci—all had a tough act to follow: the brand’s eponymous founder, Hubert de Givenchy. After launching his label in 1952, the designer stayed at the helm for over 32 glorious years, during which he became known for his forward-thinking silhouettes, buzzy clientele (most notably, actress Audrey Hepburn, who he dressed both on- and off-screen), and understated design ethos. Each successive Givenchy director has stayed true to the less-is-more approach to style, which is exactly why pared-down, elegant, designs, including Givenchy handbags, shoes, and separates, have such a timeless appeal.
