Go Monochrome

If freezing winter temps have you plotting a sunsoaked getaway, you’ll want to send this striking swim trend to the top of your packing list. “You can never go wrong with monochromatic black and white,” says Shopbop Fashion Director Caroline Maguire. “It’s a timeless combo, plus it goes with everything else in your suitcase!” This season, look for the elevated palette in chic cover-ups, flattering one-pieces, and effortless two-piece sets, meaning there’s an eye-catching look for every vacation vibe. Dial up the drama with a sleek black suit and optic white pareo (just don’t forget cat-eye sunnies), or opt for a skirted bottom for a cool, unexpected approach. Tonal takes from L*SPACE and Good American are sure to get noticed on the sand.

Haute Halters

The Y2K throwback trend is still going strong, and that holds true for swimwear—specifically the halter top. “The latest aughts-inspired necklines have a just-right style for everybody, from barely-there stringy ties to supportive wide bands,” says Maguire. Modern with a vintage feel, halters are making a comeback in one-piece swimsuits, tankinis, and bikini sets. Lean into the ‘00s look with beach-ready brights from SIR or fun floral options from Agua Bendita—then tie it all together with colorful frames & a net bag that nods to the noughties.

Chic & Strapless

Sexy, sleek & key to avoiding weird tan lines, shoulder-baring suits will make waves in 2024. The minimalist silhouette is bound to earn style points at the beach—and way beyond, predicts Maguire. “Strapless swim doubles as a going-out top, making it a must pack for any getaway,” she says. “Trade your cover-up for cool cutoffs or a flowy maxi skirt and you’re ready for dinner.” Whether you show some skin in a bandeau bikini or a full-piece suit, the pared-down silhouette lets textures and prints take center stage. Crochet, ribbing, terry, and scarf motifs are among the trending looks you’ll spot on the sand. Need some shopping inspo? Score dreamy, patterned iterations from Zimmermann and flattering stretchy styles from Hunza G.

Matchy-Matchy

In the mood to choose your own style adventure? Matching swim is the move. “Coordinating sets are supremely versatile,” says Maguire. “Double down and wear both pieces. Mix and match. Wear one but not the other. It’s endless looks in one.” If you find yourself on vacay with only a few minutes to prep for the pool, there’s nothing more put-together than a red bikini and a matching crimson lip. Take it a step further and top with a coordinating cover-up. And here’s a pro tip to get the most from your suitcase: don’t be afraid to play matchmaker with different pieces from your bikini lineup. (Keep the look intentional by grounding everything in the same color palette.) And swimsuits aren’t the only silhouettes getting the coordinating treatment in 2024. Stay (and look) cool in head-to-toe cabana sets from FARM Rio, or a breezy head-to-toe outfit from MIKOH.

Chocolate Brown

Move over little black swimsuit—rich cocoa brown is a shore thing for 2024. The rich-toned neutral showed up across virtually every silhouette in 2023, and it’s not going anywhere come swim season. A chocolate one-piece worn on its own is perennially chic, but Maguire favors a more unexpected styling approach: “What I love most about this shade is how well it plays with other hues. Pair a deep brown suit with a pastel beach bag or bright red sandals for a pop of color.” A.L.C., Johanna Ortiz and Hunza G are among the brands embracing the covetable color, with silhouettes ranging from streamlined one-pieces to statement sets and metallic-finish bikinis—which means you can get your chocolate fix, no matter your beach style.
