LET'S ALL LIGHT A SPARKLER TO
celebrate American sportswear's
enduring contribution to fashion. With
DNA that can be traced back to the
patrician style of East Coast bluebloods,
this classic look has a storied history in
style. How to do timeless for 2009?
Fashion Director Kate Ciepluch has a
few ideas.

Though it has evolved over time, certain
characteristics continue to define the
sportswear aesthetic. Kate cites blazers,
button-downs, pea coats, polos, and
waist-defining dresses, and a palette that
includes white, neutrals, solid primary
colors, and pastels. "Tried-and-true patterns
like stripes, plaids, and seersucker are also
a big part of this look," she says.

Which lines are taking classic in a new
direction? Rag & Bone for starters. Kate
points out: "Their button-downs are
oversized and their striped polos and
boat-necks are faded or fitted. They're also
masters of mixing in elements of downtown
street style, pairing motorcycle jackets and
leather skirts with preppier pieces."
