Fresh off his CFDA Fashion Fund award, there
were great expectations for Alexander Wang's
fall collection, and this young upstart delivered.
With a Who's Who of fashion elite in attendance,
Wang opened the show with a smoke machine
and "Welcome to the Jungle": a fitting sound-
track to the ´80s-inflected cutout dresses,
jumpsuits, studded-down-the-side pants,
and croc-embossed leather blazers that
stomped down the runway. Undeniably
predatory, this cohesive, thoroughly realized
collection seemed the ultimate valentine to
Wang's muse - the modern femme fatale.
Fashion's favorite newcomer fielded a few
questions for us:
What (or who) was your first inspiration
for the current collection?
Carnivores.
How do you stay inspired during the
design process?
Continue to live life outside of the office.
How do you go about editing down your
collection to its final form?
Call in my friends to help.
How do you decide which pieces to send
down the runway?
Wow factor.
What excites you most about fashion week?
The adrenaline rush.
What is your favorite part about being
a designer?
The creative freedom.
What is the best compliment anyone gave you
as a designer?
That they never want to take my clothes
off - besides with a lover.
Describe your fall line in six words.
Carnivore, animalistic, exposed, industrial,
layered, armor.
When did you know you wanted to be
a designer?
Probably when I was nine.
Who (or what) was your first inspiration
as a designer?
The gingerbread man.
