High hopes, disappointed
I was obsessed with this sandal and thought a long time before pulling the trigger. I was so excited to try them on! The leather is natural and the style is so simple and artless. Because I'm short I was drawn to this particular style by the mid-height wedge. But when I tried the sandals on I was disappointed. First, the strap between the toes was very stiff and thick. I am sure that they would have softened up with wear, but I didn't want to take a chance or endure the inevitable blisters and abrasion. Second, on my winter pale legs the undyed leather looked raw, not flattering at all, and the strap design was not elongating, which I had assumed it would be. Third, the wedge looks a little like plywood, very pale and with a conspicuous grain and whorls. It looks unfinished. I think that the flat Ancient Greek sandals are a safer bet, and I would avoid any thong styles because of the stiffness of the leather out of the box.

The only winter hat that works for me.
First let me say that almost all hats look ridiculous on me. Something about my face--slightly long, with a prominent nose--makes it look almost demented in winter hats. Plus I hate scratchy wool; it makes me break out and I'd rather freeze than suffer. But this hat is different. It's a clever riff on the ubiquitous beanie, but not too slouchy. I have a small face and I appreciate not being overwhelmed with billows of knit on my head. Plus, though the yarn looks very wooly, in a good way, it is completely comfortable to wear. It stays put on your head so if you're fussy about wearing your hat just so it will work for you. I love the little pleat at the back, a subtle design detail that makes it special. And the yarn is gorgeous, tweedy with a lot of tweed-like colors (zoom in to see how much variation there is). It's really warm, too. In fact, I bought this hat twice; I lost the first one and was so happy that I found a replacement on ShopBop!

perfect summer dress
I love Steven Alan summer dresses; they are easy to wear, flattering, and walk the line between artsy and preppy. The price is justified by subtle styling and excellent construction. This is a great example of the SA look. I chose the plaid; at first it looks like a classic madras that you've seen on a million shirts and shorts, but the blues shade from a deep teal to gray blue, making it much more offbeat. The P fit my small frame great. It was a little starchy right out of the box but that softens up with wearing/washing. The only reason I didn't keep it was that I prefer a longer length; this dress has zero hem allowance. It was painful sending it back, though; it would be fantastic for hot summer days.
